Pro Race Driver, the latest from Codemasters, attempts to do what few other racing games have done: add a realistic story alongside the races. Apex, to a degree, played out in a similar fashion, but focused more on building and development. Pro Race Driver centers around a rookie driver trying to break into the big races. Although the plot is reasonably corny, it does give you a reason to play....

Pro Race Driver is the fourth in Codemasters' series of touring-car games, which goes by many different names around the world -- none of them as stunningly generic as Pro Race Driver, but I digress. Originally released late last year for the PlayStation 2, on which it suffered by unfair and inevitable comparison to the unstoppable Gran Turismo 3, Pro Race Driver deserves a second chance at...

Although it doesn't happen often enough, the furious outburst from one of your competitors confronting you in your garage is made all the more hilarious by the fact that he never takes his race helmet off. Muffled outrage is an underutilized comic instrument but the team at Codemasters sure made it sound realistic.

Pro Race Driver for Xbox
Strengths: Licensed cars, tracks and road race championships, state-of-the-art physics engine, customizable cars, visible damage affects vehicle handling
Weakness: Perhaps a bit too real, minor graphics and physics issues, can become frustrating just like real life
Despite the rather generic title, Pro Race Driver actually features 42 licensed touring and race cars (Mercedes CLK, Alfa Romeo GTV, Viper GTS, etc.), 38 licensed international road courses (Bathurst, Hockenheim, Silverstone, etc.) and 13 licensed global championships (Germany DTM, Australia V8 Supercars, British Touring Car Championship, etc.). Its advertising suggests that the car physics engine was tested by professional drivers for realism, and its customizable car setup is supposed to provide a true-to-life driving and performance experience. Damage received during a race is created using the crash test industry's FEM system and affects your car's handling and drivability. What does all of this mean?
Pro Race Driver provides perhaps the best road race simulation game currently available on Xbox. Xbox has a number of decent arcade racing titles, but none of these have the combination of licensed cars, tracks and championships packaged together with a realistic physics engine and damage modelling. If you're interested in a Gran Tourismo caliber racing simulation, Pro Race Drive is probably the closest you'll get to it on Xbox until Forza Motorsports comes out.
